'The Inner Game method of teaching tennis, and any other sport, is the most progressive, the most fun and the most natural way to play the game. Tim Gallwey’s Inner Game of Tennis book is an all time classic.
The Inner Works Coaching team teach the Inner Game tools and techniques to other coaches to use with kids and adults alike. New Zealand, known for its sporting success, has recently adopted these principles for the teaching of all their sports, the first country to do so – but by no means the last.'
Sir John Whitmore
Thanks to all those who attended our recent Coaching for Self-Belief courses. We wish you well in your continued exploration of the ideas and look forward to hearing from you and seeing you again at one of our Skill Building courses!
Inner Game History on You Tube!
Take a look at this video featuring a 1975 American ABC documentary in which Tim Gallwey was challenged to get a complete beginner, Molly, to play tennis in twenty minutes.
From the video:
Tim: 'The key of all the exercises in the Inner Game is to focus the mind's attention somewhere where it will not interfere with the body's ability to hit the ball automatically.'
Molly: 'Everytime I did start to think, things went wrong. When you just stop thinking, the body seems to know what to do!'
Tim: 'Have a clear idea of what you want, then let it happen.'
Molly: 'All of a sudden, everything became effortless..'
So how do we as coaches or performers help reduce the kind of mental interference that Molly describes in this video?
